Web Design – new domain name registration best practice

Choosing the best domain name for your business:
You have the idea, the business plan (f you're lucky, the cash) now you need a business name. One of the questions we get asked all the time on our online marketing workshops is what name to go with.
For most small businesses selling in Ireland I'd recommend the following approach:
1. Register 2 domain names
Brandname.ie
For email and offline marketing register the .ie version of your chosen brand name. You can have look for a.com name, but it's unlikely to be available.
Keyphrase-location.ie*
For search engines it always helps to get the phrase that people use most often to find you in the domain name. This is often best researched through Google Adwords - this helps find not just the term with the most traffic, but the one that generates the most business. Once you've indentified your key phrase, you then need to look at the location you serve and combine the two.
Ashbournephysio.ie is a good example of this in action.
2. Create a permanent redirect from the homepage of brandname.ie to keyphrase-location.ie
From there you’re good to go.
*the hyphen is optional (just don’t use an underscore “_”)
